5 Top Tips for Hosting a Murder Mystery Party this Summer

Summer is upon us and you know what that means - better weather, longer evenings, and a hot new murder mystery or two! With the release of our new game, A Killer 60s Festival, we wanted to share with you some of our top tips for choosing, setting up, and enjoying a murder mystery party this summer.

So dust off your sunglasses, dig out your festival gear, and get warmed up for summer with our list of hosting tips…

1 – Pick a theme with summer vibes

If you are looking to host a summery murder mystery party, it only makes sense to pick a theme that leans into this. Our 60s festival themed mystery is perfect for this season, and is the best balm for those of you who count down to your favourite festival each year. From the outfits to the tunes to the characters themselves, you are in for a whole summer experience with this game.

Another top pick for this time of year is our Bridgerton inspired murder mystery game. Get set up outside with a sunny tea party complete with scandal, sensational storylines, and of course a shocking murder.

2 – Pick your setting

When deciding the setting for your party, make the most of the improved weather if you can and consider hosting outdoors. Opt for your garden, the local woods, or even a fully-fledged camping trip to suit our 80s horror flick themed game Camp Deadwood, and enjoy getting out of the house and into a good mystery!

3 – Set it up the way you want

One way to really add that extra oomph to your murder mystery party is to set it up right! With our festival game, consider tents, camping chairs, festival-friendly drinks out of cans or plastic cups, and a fire pit or similar to gather round. This will work just as well for a camping mystery, and just how into the theme you get is up to you!

If you are thinking of a tea party themed game, you can go for a proper table set up with chairs, napkins, and a glorious spread, or you can go more relaxed with blankets and a picnic-style set up.

4 – Plan your food

Food is pretty much essential when planning an afternoon or evening with friends and family, particularly if the booze is flowing! Depending on the kind of party you want to have, you can really choose whichever type of food suits you. As it is summer, it is unlikely you’ll want to do a proper 3 course sit down dinner like you might with our 1930s Manor House mystery.

Instead, for our Bridgerton themed game, consider setting up an outdoor tea party or picnic with finger sandwiches, cakes, and our delightful teapot cocktail suggestions. For our festival game, go for a BBQ with plenty of easy to grab food like hotdogs or wraps.

5 – Go for only the hottest hits

Once you have your theme, your layout set, and your food and drinks organised, all that remains is to create the right atmosphere for your party. That means top tunes. Each of our games comes with a Spotify playlist that should get your guests in the mood to sleuth, and to have them feeling like they really are rocking out in the 60s or waltzing in the 1800s. Why not have a listen for yourself?
