Costume hacks for a Halloween outfit to die for
With Halloween just around the corner finding the right outfit can feel like a nightmare! Set outfits from fancy dress shops can be a fortune and still leave you looking clichéd, and you don’t want to just throw on a white sheet and call it good enough! When it feels like all inspiration has been scared away, read on to discover all you need to ensure you are dressed to kill this spooky season…
Pick a theme
Before you start to put together a killer outfit you need to choose what kind of look to go for. Are you in the mood for classic horror or something a little more magical? Do you want to dress up as the pirate you arrrr or go as something really scary – a 00s Mean Girl! If the options are starting to overwhelm, we know just the place to start.
Get into the Halloween spirit with a Sisters Grimm murder mystery game complete with costume tips for every character. With over a dozen different themes to choose from spanning decades and genres, you are sure to find the perfect mystery – and outfit theme – for you.
Options like a pirate theme are popular because the outfits are fairly simple to throw together, while a 1920s theme might take more planning but comes with plenty of inspiration and set looks. Have a look for yourself and see if you can get inspired!
Seek out hidden treasures without spending a fortune
The first port of call for any self-respecting bargain hunter looking for their perfect Halloween costume has to be your local charity and thrift shops. There amongst the tea sets, kids’ toys, and dramatically over- and under-sized garments you are sure to find at least a few gems. A bandana and stripy shirt can quickly become a pirate costume while the right hat can inspire all sorts of ideas. (The parrot costume is hard to DIY but tons of fun!)
Remember that props can make an outfit just as much as the clothes so have a proper dig about and see what you can uncover. The right shoes, a dress or even a toy can provide the corner stone of a costume and give you all the inspiration you need, from a colour associated with a favourite character to a style that screams a certain decade.
Reuse and reimagine!
In pretty much every house and wardrobe are overlooked and unloved items waiting to be turned into the perfect outfit. That skirt you’ve grown out of could make an excellent 60s style iconic mini. Your old school kit could make for a perfect 90s Britney in our music awards mystery, or depending on the colour and style, it could work for a Harry Potter party.
Borrowing from a family member or friend can help you save money that can be better spent on a few treats this Halloween, as well as giving an outfit a night on the town. Your mum might love to be asked and come up with tons of ideas, or perhaps that hat of your mate’s would go great with a Gatsby look? Raid your cupboards and see for yourself!
