Dressing to Kill – 60s Themed Fashions to Die For
One of the best things about playing a murder mystery game is getting dressed up and into character. Whether you are a 90s pop star, a teen in an 80s horror flick, or an elderly lady in a manor house, all of our games come with costume suggestions to inspire you and help you put together a look that could really kill.
Pretty much any themed mystery will have some incredible fashions to choose from. In honour of our latest game, a Killer 60s Festival, here are some of the grooviest fashions from a truly rockin’ era…
Go Bold
With the 60s you can go as bold as you like, and not just in how you act! Bold colours are a fab choice for 60s fashion, whether you are going for coloured tights, shift dresses, or the hugely popular mini-skirt.
Think prints in cheerful and fun colours and styles or monochrome, big hair or pixie cuts, flower power or dress all in black. In the 60s anything goes, so pick your favourite style, check your wardrobe, your mum’s or even your gran’s, and go bold!
The Hippie Look
A style that many would consider to be at the very centre of the 60s and continuing in to the 70s, hippie fashions are a fun and fabulous way to let your look scream 60s. Think fringes, florals, peasant blouses and skirts, and bell-bottom jeans. Earth tones but also colourful designs were popular, and so many of today’s fashions still have plenty of the same style as Hippies did back then.
Let your hair flow free but tie a band of leather or fabric around your head, throw on a necklace with feathers or the peace symbol and get ready to embrace mother Earth with this iconic look.
The Mod Look
When you picture a 60s It Girl rocking a brightly coloured shift dress with a raised hemline or go-go boots and a mini skirt, you are picturing a mod look. Highly fashionable, modern, and liberated, with this kind of style you are sure to look and feel groovy. Far from the prim and proper fashions of the 50s, celebrities like Twiggy demonstrated just how bold you could really go in the 60s.
The Beatnik Look
Popular in the 50s and 60s, this look is perfect for a brooding artist or musician and can easily be put together from most wardrobes! Think black turtlenecks, black trousers, stripes, berets, and did we mention black clothes? Often associated with the arts and especially with jazz, this look will go perfectly with our game The Art of Murder, set at a 60s art exhibition, as well as our festival game.
Go for an iconic look…
One great way to get inspiration for your 60s themed costume is to check out some of the iconic celebrities from the time and what they were wearing. Many of the characters in our festival themed game are inspired by some of the best and brightest from this era, and seeing what real people wore is a perfect place to start!
Don’t forget to check out the costume suggestions provided in your character booklets and feel free to put your own spin on any outfit. Never be afraid to let your freak flag fly!
