FAQs – Making the most of your Truth or Dare cards

Truth or Dare? A game most of us played from a very young age, and some of us still play now! From sleepovers to parties and pubs, this eternal game is now a part of some of our murder mystery games. Our evidence based mingling party games include several moving parts which help to keep your guests guessing while having a ball.

Here we will introduce a key element – the Truth or Dare cards – and give you some tips and tricks to best use them in your murder mystery night…

What is Truth or Dare?

As many if not most people know, Truth or Dare is a game involving one simple choice – will you tell the truth or do a dare? In our mingling mystery games, we have included a Truth or Dare element to encourage more interaction between guests. They come in the form of printed out cards that direct you to perform a dare or tell someone a truth about your character.

Exactly how you incorporate this is up to you. You can choose to have a special area set up where your guests perform their dares for all to see, such as the middle of the ‘dance floor’ in our 90s music awards after party game. Or players can opt to fulfil their task from their Truth or Dare card in front of just those nearest at the time.

Some fun examples for you

‘Truth’ cards are all roughly the same and involve the sharing of secrets. In your character booklet you have certain secrets to keep to yourself, but if you pull a truth card on your go, it’s time to fess up!

The exact nature of the dare will vary depending on the game that you have chosen and is typically based on that theme. For instance, a 1990s dare might involve popular songs or dances from the time, including acting like a popular figure or singing a snippet by your favourite boyband. The 1960s, meanwhile, would have less boybands but plenty of peace and love.

From our various 10-20 player mingling murder mysteries, check out some of our favourite examples if you dare!

·       Name 3 magic spells

·       Dance the Macarena

·       Snap a selfie with your band mates

·       Sing a snippet from your favourite Spice Girls song

·       Snap a paparazzi pic of your fave outfit here

·       Do your best impression of a 60s musician

·       Air guitar!

When to play truth or dare

In your character booklets you will see a ‘To-Do’ list which will tell you what to do throughout the game. Roughly a third of the players will have a truth or dare prompt in each of the three rounds. Exactly when you go during in that round is up to you and the host. You may decide to make a spectacle of your performance and do them all together at the beginning or end of the round.

Alternatively, you can make it a small side quest that gets individuals talking and joking as they mingle and ask questions. Either way, the truth or dare cards are a slightly silly and humorous addition to your murder mystery night!

We dare you to have a killer night!

Once you have completed the last round of your murder mystery game, decided on who you think the killer is, and had the grand reveal, the murder part of the evening is over. This does not have to mean that the party itself is dead! Truth or Dare is just one of the ways that you can keep the fun going long past the end of the mystery game.

Depending on which theme you have chosen, you can indulge in favourite games from that decade such as Twister in the 90s, Ouija or Charades in many decades including the 1920s and onwards. Using up any remaining Truth or Dare cards is the perfect way to segue into the second phase of your evening. One where you can continue to have just as much fun as you did catching a killer!
