How to Host a Harry Potter Murder Mystery Party
Looking for a totally wizard night? Hoping to bring a little magic to your evening? Look no further than a Harry Potter inspired murder mystery party, perfect for friends and family from young teens to anyone young at heart. Our magical murder mystery game is ideal for any Harry Potter fan and includes 3 murders, plenty of evidence, and no shortage of charm!
Read on to discover how to throw an enchanting event for 10-20 witches and wizards in just 5 easy steps. Not as good as a wave of a wand, but it’s close!
Step 1 – Send out your Hogwarts letters!
Decide which lucky people are going to receive an invitation and how you want to assign characters. Do you want to host a sorting ceremony? Or simply pick the best fit for each friend from the character overview provided?
You can post a list of the roles for your friends to choose their own characters or even pick names out of a sorting hat. It is up to you! We have included an email template (quicker than owl post), and advise your guests to dress to kill in their magical or muggle best.
Just remember that it is fun for each guest to wear something that represents their house colours. So if you are leaving it to the last minute, make sure you have a selection of ties, scarves, hats, and more in red, blue, green, and yellow for each guest to grab.
Step 2 – Anything from the trolley?
Plan your Harry Potter themed food and drink to really make it a magical evening. You can of course purchase the official products or use a touch of magical licence to turn affordable snacks into enchanting treats! Set out bowls of liquorice ‘wands’, ‘every flavour’ jelly beans, try your hand at making pumpkin pasties (especially at Halloween) and make sure to avoid the cockroach clusters!
For drinks for those underage wizards or anyone trying to avoid a strong potion at the end of the day, cream soda makes for pretty good butter beer, and any orange drink can be your pumpkin juice. For those who wish, Fireball whiskey is pretty perfect for Potter fans, and you can always add alcohol to your creamy butter beer. Step 3 – Set the crime scene
Our Harry Potter inspired murder mystery game is set in the Potion’s classroom, so setting up the room like that can add to the magic. Set up a few tables with ‘cauldrons’ (whatever pots and pans you have that are suitable), place some interesting ingredients around the room, and even light some flavoured candles to create a witchy aroma.
You would be amazed how many useful props for your mystery party you can find in your own home, at your local charity shop, or among your friends’ possessions. Set out your broomstick (sweeping brush) in the corner, have a stool set up with the sorting hat in another, and don’t forget your wands! Drink out of goblets, embrace Halloween decorations all year round, and have fun with it!
Step 4 – A playlist fit for any Potterhead
To really add to the atmosphere you need the right music. We have created a bespoke magical Spotify playlist for you to get into the Harry Potter spirit, and you can also make your own. Or just play the iconic theme music on a loop, we wouldn’t judge! Remember, if the night turns to killer karaoke, wands are as good as hairbrushes when it comes to makeshift mics!
