How to Host a Killer 60s Murder Mystery Party
Hoping to throw a groovy mystery for all the cool cats in your life? Hoping for a murder mystery night to die for? At Sisters Grimm we have two killer 60s themed games to choose from with different settings, group sizes, and formats to suit any fan of this far out decade.
Check out our top tips for how to host a swinging 60s party in just 6 simple steps where you can really let your freak flag fly without breaking the bank. Can you dig it?
Step 1 – Choose your game
Our fan favourite game here is our Killer 60s Festival. Set during Freedom Fest, this music heavy mystery is sure to have you boogying while searching out the slayer among you. Who is trying to harsh the festival vibe and who is simply trying to give peace a chance? Perfect for a BBQ, camp out, or general summer holidays, check out this groovy game here.
For those who might prefer a little art to music, or just ideal for smaller groups who like a scripted game, The Art of Murder is the game for you. Set during ‘Artie’ Warhol’s first exhibition, you might really be able to catch the killer red handed in this colourful mystery.
Step 2 – Invite your friends
Throw a murder mystery night and kill your friends! That’s what it’s all about! So have a think about who you want to come remembering the minimum and maximum numbers based on the game you want to play. You can go as big as up to 20 players, or anywhere from groups of 5 upwards. You will then see which characters are core (must be played) and which are optional for you to pick from.
You can pair whichever friend with whichever role you wish, just remember to pick those who are definitely coming for core roles. There are usually those that love playing a bigger part and people who might prefer to pay more attention to the mystery and less to acting. Your character overview will help with that, and will point you in the right direction if you get stuck.
Step 3 – Pick your location
Deciding where to host your game is key, as it will impact when you’ll have it if outside, how you will decorate, and how you will set it up. For our Killer 60s Festival game, you can easily set up a few camp chairs or blankets on the ground and play inside, outside, or anywhere! Set up a stage area, even a tent or two, you can really go all out!
As a cute tip for the Art of Murder, hang or lean bits of art from other parts of the house in the room you are hosting in. Or you can even print off images from 60s pop artists, and why not place that can of Campbell’s Soup in prime position? You can leave space for your guests to mingle or set up tables for them to sit, it is up to you.
Step 4 – Get Groovy!
Now you have your guest list, game, and location sorted, it is time to really get into the swinging 60s spirit! With our Spotify playlists, there will never be a moment of dead air and nothing but killer beats all night long.
You can add even more of a 60s feel by getting dressed to kill! There are amazing finds in many of your local charity or thrift shops, you can check in with family members for vintage options, and the same is true for props and decorations.
Step 5 – Serve up a killer cocktail!
Included in your Sisters Grimm 60s game you will find custom cocktail suggestions to give your drinks a real 60s twist! While your guests can of course bring anything they like, leaning into the theme can be tons of fun with bottle labels to go on beer and wine, perfect for those killer pics. For our 60s festival themed murder mystery, opt for ciders, cans, and don’t forget to drink water!
For our art exhibition themed game, grab a glass of vino as you admire the art of the killer attempting to get away with murder. Cocktails became far more of a trend in the 60s so raise a glass and get sleuthing.
Step 6 – Follow your handy how to play guide!
Now that you have got everything ready, your guests are here with a drink in hand, and the music is all gravy, baby, you are ready to start the game. Don’t worry about how to gather your group, what to say, or how to set the scene. We’ve got you covered! Everything you need to play a groovy 60s mystery is included in your kit, even tips and tricks for keeping the party going all night long!
