A ‘Ton’ of fashion tips
One of the first things to really consider when crafting your costume is what was fashionable at the time Bridgerton was set – the 1810s. This does not mean that you have to stay totally historically accurate with what you wear. Some people may choose to go more authentic, but far more important is that you love how you look and feel fabulous.
There were a number of fashion trends that were popular at this time, including:
- The classical Greek look (think bare arms and up dos)
- Blonde wigs
- Gloves with rings on top
- Top hats
- Canes with fancy tops, containing sabres and so on!
- Colourful vests
- Fans
- Feathers
- Headdresses
- Plaited hair
- Pastel colours and flower prints
- Extravagant jewellery
As you can see, there are a variety of styles of dress and props that you can add to your outfit to feel truly Bridgerton fashionable without having to hire out a professional outfit. Keep in mind these fashion tips but remember you can choose to dress up however you want, in whatever you want.
From the Modiste to the modest
It may be that you have a glamourous evening gown that you have been dying to give a night out to, or love an excuse to go out and buy one. Yet, you don’t have to visit Madame Delacroix to be fitted with an outfit worthy of the ton.
You would be amazed at the variety and quality of the clothes and accessories you can discover at your local charity or thrift shop. You can make an adventure of it, trying to put together the best outfit for less than the cost of a fancy cup of coffee. And while you are there, check out the props like tea sets, fans, and even glassware that can be an absolute bargain to dress up your house as well as you are dressing yourself.
It’s all about having a ball
When it comes to costumes for any murder mystery party, you will see some recommendations on how your character should look, how they should dress, and what they might be carrying. These really are only guidelines though.
You should feel free to put your own spin on the costumes and how you get ready for your party. Some groups like to opt for summer dresses with a few glow up props like feather headbands and fans. Others like to go all out ball gowns. It really is up to you! Just remember that a true diamond of the season must be perfection itself, but the only opinion that matters is your own. And Lady Whistledown’s of course!
