Where to hold a murder mystery party depends largely on what kind of game you choose to buy. Some are perfectly suited to be played around a dinner table or sat on a sofa and a few chairs, while others would be better suited to somewhere more spacious. Read on for more info, tips, and hacks for where and how to set up your ideal murder mystery party…
The size of your group
One of the first things to decide when planning a murder mystery is how many people you want to invite. This affects not only where you will throw the party, but which game you can buy. For a larger group, you will need a larger venue and a game with more characters, while a smaller group could fit in a smaller space.
For our 10-20 player games, we recommend a bit more space so you can move about freely and ask each other questions, but you can still sit around a big table if you wish, it’s up to you. With our fully scripted games, we have a wide range of group sizes from 4-15, so you can go for the size that suits your setting, or pick the setting from the size.
Think outside the box
One of the best ways to throw a truly killer party is to take it outside! Whether you have a garden or are near enough to some woods or even a park, when the weather is nice why not set up your party in the fresh air? It is good for the brain too, which can only help when trying to catch the killer among you!
Our Killer 60s Festival game is so easy to set up outside, and how much you stage it is up to you. You can go for a blanket on the floor while you play, or go all out with camping chairs, tents, a BBQ, and more.
Likewise, our 80s horror flick themed game, Camp Deadwood, can be played out in the woods just as easily as it could be set in a ‘cabin’ (any inside space you want!). Your theme can help lead you to the perfect setting, so go with your favourite decade or costume and go from there.
Make adjustments to suit your game
While some people may choose to hold a camp-themed game in the woods or a festival-themed game in a fully decked out garden, that isn’t an option available to every person. That doesn’t mean that you can’t set your party up to look fab. Even if you are pressed for space or don’t have many options where to hold your party, you can still adjust the room you have to suit your theme.
Our 60s game, The Art of Murder, for example, is suited to 6-8 players and can comfortably be played in your living room. However, as it is set in an art gallery, you could choose to have your guests move through your halls or other rooms. You could move your furniture and print out some pictures of famous pieces from the 60s to stick up on the walls and make it look more authentic.
Have a ball
Remember, it’s your party and you can set it up wherever and however you want. Our games are role-playing games where each of your guests will act out a character, so a bit of imagination is expected. Even if space is limited, you can still set the scene to your group. Explaining that you’re in small tea room off the side of the imaginary ballroom in our Bridgerton inspired game, for example.
The important thing is that you all have a blast, get dressed up, and try and work out who the killer is among you. Ideally with a killer cocktail and plenty of laughter along the way. Wherever you end up holding your party, your guests are sure to have a ball.
