Top FAQs – What to do if you have more female guests than characters at your murder mystery party and vice versa

One important thing to remember when planning any party is that things don’t always work out perfectly. Someone cancels at the last minute or suddenly can come, someone brings along a plus one without mentioning it, or even two or three. All of our games come with flexible guest numbers to account for latecomers, but some hosts have other issues with their guest list.

A common question we get asked about our murder mystery games is what the host should do if the numbers and genders of the guests and characters don’t line up. People often get in touch stating they have too many men or women, so here we will go through a couple of alternatives for you, and which work best with our different games…

Buy an all-female version in the first place

Several of our games including the hugely popular 90s house party game Clue-less Killer, and our 80s horror flick themed game Camp Deadwood, have all-female versions for you to choose. Ideal for a retro sleepover, murder mystery for teens, or just a chance to hang out with the girls, our all-female games are available for up to 15 players.

The majority of the people who message asking about assigning characters have more women than men. If you are playing one of the above games and still have a mix of people playing, we are always happy to send you over an extra female booklet to replace a male character if you need!

Choose an expansion character instead

Our 10-20 player evidence based mingling mysteries come complete with core characters and expansion characters. The first 10 are suspects, victims, and can hold essential pieces of information, however if you really don’t want to use one of them and cannot find anyone to play that role, it isn’t the end of the world.

Simply print out the character booklet and display it with the evidence where all your guests can see it. Then you can choose one of the expansion characters that best suits your remaining guest. If you want advice on which character is best to leave out, get in touch!

Have fun playing any character any way you want!

Finally, often the best option for when you have an uneven split of men to women is to ask your guests if they fancy playing the opposite sex. We have an almost overwhelming number of reviews where the party has been incredible in part because of this person or that dressing up and having a ball as any character they want.

Just remember if you are going this way to get your pictures done at the start. Fake beards, eyebrows, and other props can soon go missing when you are having fun!

It all comes down to you, your group of guests, and how you want to play. So check out the different characters, dress to kill, and don’t hesitate to contact us with any and all questions you might have, or see what else you can find in our blog and FAQs today.
